Lecture: Navigating religious freedom in a precarious world
Host: International Association for Religious Freedom (HK Chapter)
Speaker: Jai Chan Sze Chi, retired Senior Lecturer, HK Baptist University
Time: 7pm - 8:30pm
Place: Hong Kong Christian Institute, 10/F, 11 Mong Kok Rd, Kowloon
Enquiry: Marc 6898 8406
Navigating religious freedom in a precarious world--the conflict between religious freedom & individual freedom. As the world has entered into a precarious phase due to all the rapid changes in technology, state power, and human self-awareness, the religio-cultural regime that traditional religions imposed on post-modern human beings seems increasingly untenable. This has caused a backlash among traditional religions, not the least some last-ditch effort to stop social progress towards a more liberal progressive culture. On the other hand, the innate fear that our traditional relatively tranquil life after World War II being seriously compromised has sparked another xenophobic backlash among many, if not all, European and Western countries. The composite effect of these two major streams of development needs to be pondered in detail and with extreme caution.

UUHK speaks at
IDAHOT HK 2018: LoveNotHate
Time: 3pm-6pm
Venue: Chater Garden, Central
On 17 May 1990, homosexuality was officially removed from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) of the World Health Organization (WHO). Since then, May 17 is marked as the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia (IDAHOT) that aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights. In recent years, over 130 countries are organizing various commemorations in support of the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
The theme for this year's IDAHOT is "Alliances for Solidarity". Pink Dot HK, BigLove Alliance and Covenant of the Rainbow will be hosting a HK commemorating event in which guests and representatives from various Asian regions will be sharing their stories and experience in combating homophobia. Amnesty International HK will run an exhibition to raise awareness of violence, discrimination, and repression of LGBT communities worldwide. A religious memorial service will pay tribute to those who were hurt, oppressed, imprisoned or even killed in homophobic violence and hate crimes. The event can serve as a great opportunity to engage in dialogue with the media, policymakers, public opinion, and the wider civil society. We sincerely invite everyone to join us in solidarity to say no to hatred!

Talk: Buddhism and Human Rights: An Alliance of Shared Ethics
Host: International Association for Religious Freedom (HK Chapter) & UUHK Buddhist Sangha
Speaker: Raymond Lam, Senior Writer, Buddhistdoor
Time: 2:30pm - 4:00pm
Place: Hong Kong Christian Institute, 10/F, 11 Mong Kok Rd, Kowloon
Human rights depend on axiomatic statements that take for granted the inherent worth of the human being. A Buddhist purist might call the notion of inherent human rights a dogma--a benevolent dogma, but a dogma nevertheless. After all, as there is no self and no permanence, how real is any kind of inherent right? Nevertheless, across Asia throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Buddhist nationalists allied the philosophy human rights with Buddhist principles in their ideological attack on European colonialism. In today's uncertain world, where human rights are still taken for granted yet violated continuously, what does Buddhist philosophy have to say about the idea of natural rights?
Raymond Lam is a Buddhist in the Chinese tradition and Senior Writer at Buddhistdoor. As a journalist of religion, he regularly reports and opines about religion and society, culture, and politics.
