Visit the Sri Lankan Buddhist Cultural Centre
Host: Hong Kong Sacred Spaces
Time: 2:45pm - 4:45pm
Place: 3/F, 27 Sheung Heung Rd, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon
It goes without saying that in Hong Kong Buddhism means Mahayana Buddhism. Most people take it for granted that when the word "Buddhism" is used and people speak of the person known as Siddhārtha Gautama they are speaking of an avatar of sorts, a cultural projection that is decidedly Chinese. The Buddha himself was born, lived, and died on the Indian Subcontinent and his message has its roots there. One of the original formation of the Buddha’s message is Theravada (from Pali meaning "school of the elder monks") and it remains a core aspect of Buddhist practice around the world.
Travelers from Hong Kong mostly encounter Theravada Buddhism in Southeast Asia but there are places right here in Hong Kong that practice this ancient tradition. The Sri Lankan Buddhist Cultural Centre is one of the few working Theravada temples in Hong Kong which serves as an important link to Theravada Buddhism and the local Sri Lankan community. Venerable Sumiththa from the Centre has been kind enough to extend an invitation to Hong Kong Sacred Spaces for a dharma talk and introduction to Theravada practice, the Centre, and the local Sri Lankan community.
Why not spend a few hours with Hong Kong Sacred Spaces to learn about Theravada Buddhism and the Indian roots of Buddhism?
We'll be meeting directly at the Centre. There are several bus routes in and out of To Kwa Wan. It's best that you use the Centre's address and plot the best route for you.

The Fear of Gender and Recognition
Time: 2:30pm-4:00pm
Place: Hong Kong Christian Institute, 10/F, 11 Mongkok Rd
Speaker: Ms Joanne Leung (founder of TGR)
The Hong Kong Government released a consultation paper on gender recognition following its detailed study on recognition issues in June. The recognition of a small group of trans people seems to have raised a lot of fear in the society. Where did this fear come from and how is it affecting the life of everybody?
Joanne was born as a boy and completed her Sex Reassignment Surgery in 2009. She is a public figure in the LGBT movement in Hong Kong and Mainland China. She founded the Transgender Resource Center (TGR) in 2008 and has been the chairperson since then. In 2016, Joanne took a big step forward by joining the Democratic Party as the first transgender politician in Hong Kong.

UUHK Humanist Group gathering
Explore Life's Big Questions
Time: 2:30pm-4pm
Place: Hong Kong Christian Institute, 10/F, 11 Mongkok Road, Mongkok, Kowloon
The essence this first meeting: Do you like regular atheist gatherings? Let's talk!
In the latest issue of the UU monthly newsletter Quest, a short story for kids tells a simple basic worldview of atheism: humans are made of atoms. One of the purposes for which religions have been invented was to answer the fundamental existential question: where do we come from? Atheism does have an answer: we are made of atoms which come from the stars. This simple story brought out the vital message: Atheists should and can ask and answer life's ultimate questions (Where do we come from? What is the meaning of life? How should we live? Where will we end up?). Exploring these big questions from the perspective of atheism shall be important and interesting! Do you like regular atheist gatherings? Regular gatherings can build a sense of community, something that is often lacking for atheists. Shall we start one? If yes, what to do? How often? Where to meet? Let's talk and enjoy the process!
Form: Free discussions, brain-storming
Agenda:
1. Establish worthiness (if not, simply drop the idea)
2. Set purpose/aim/directions
3. Plan arrangements:
a) What to do (discussions on podcasts*; participants take turn to organize?)
b) Frequency (weekly/biweekly/monthly)
c) Venue (CityU canteen/Starbucks/a pub/HKCI/etc.)
d) As a joint event with other atheist group(s) in Hong Kong?
e) Sunday Assembly?**
*Example podcast material: Podcast "Waking Up with Sam Harris" Episode 67: Meaning and Chaos
"In this episode of the Waking Up podcast, Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson discuss science, religion, archetypes, mythology, and the perennial problem of finding meaning in life."
**A possible model: Sunday Assembly (Anyone interested in setting one up in Hong Kong?)
e)Sunday Assembly?**
